Tom Petty passed away last night – The singer-songwriter was rushed to hospital after suffering cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu and could not be revived. Petty just wrapped up his 40th anniversary tour with The Heartbreakers. He was 66.
Canadians Killed in Las Vegas – Three Canadians were among the 59 killed in Sunday night’s Las Vegas shooting: Jessica Klymchuk of Alberta, Jordan McIldoon of BC, the third unknown at the time of this post. Six Canadians are among the 527 people injured, another Canadian is reported missing in what is being called the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history. Right here at home, Halifax police are flying the American flag at their Gottingen Street offices to recognize the lives lost in the attack.
Celebrity Reaction to Shooting – Many celebrities shared messages of prayers and love on social media following the shooting which happened during a country music festival headlined by Jason Aldean; Dancing with the Stars paid tribute to all those affected during their live broadcast last night and Trump called the attack “an act of pure evil” during a televised address yesterday and plans to visit the city tomorrow.
Canada’s New Governor General Sworn in – Julie Payette has been sworn-in as Canada’s 29th Governor General; the astronaut and single mom urged Canadians to reach for their dreams in her speech; Justin Trudeau called Payette a trailblazer, inspiration and exceptional Canadian.
Jaromir Jagr Signs on with the Flames – Jaromir Jagr just doesn’t want to retire! The 45-year-old signed a one-year, one million dollar contract to play for the Calgary Flames this coming season. Jagr wants to take the ice just 57 more times to eclipse Gordie Howe’s all-time mark of 1,767 career games played. This will be the first Canadian team he has ever played for.
