On Tuesday, Donald Trump made a call to Ireland’s newly-elected prime minister Leo Varadkar from the Oval Office as reporters from the Irish media looked on. Video shows Trump telling Varadkar that he has “a lot of these beautiful Irish press” in the room (WHY does he use that word ALL. The. Time. to describe everything!!!) and then singling out RTE reporter Caitriona Perry, asking her to come forward and tell him her name. As she explains who she works for, Trump tells Varadkar, “She has a nice smile on her face so I’m sure she treats you well.” Perry laughs uncomfortably and then walks away. What the hell does that even mean?
She later posted the clip on her social media accounts and captioned it “one of the most bizarre moments of my life.” Critics responded by calling Trump’s comment creepy and apologizing on his behalf. “We apologize that our president is a weird, inappropriate creep,” one tweeted. Another wrote, “He called you over to look you over. Gross.”
